A brake pedal system includes a brake pedal 12 having a flexible arm 14 with a first end 16 fixedly mounted to a vehicle structure 18 and a second end 20 having a foot pad 21. A sensor 22 on the brake pedal produces a signal corresponding to the amount of deflection of the arm fo controlling a brake-by-wire system. A stop 24 is adapted to be mounted within the vehicle at a distance from the brake arm such that the brake arm will contact the stop after flexing a predetermined amount. Increases in pedal stiffness will occur depending on stop properties: a non-compressible stop may have one point (A, fig 4); a compressible stop may have two points (A,B, fig 5) when compression of the stop bottoms out; while a compressible stop having layers of materials of different stiffnesses may have three points (A, B, C fig 6). Additionally, the arm 14 may be made of a "smart material" so that its stiffness may be increased or decreased by passing an electric current through it to suit personal preference of the operator (fig 7). |
