PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device having a simple construction improving the start of a high pressure discharge lamp by controlling the peak or width of a pulse voltage waveform to be applied to the high pressure discharge lamp when starting. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises pulse transformers PT1, PT2, wherein secondary windings of the plurality of pulse transformers PT1, PT2 to which power supply means C4, C6 are connected for supplying power to the pulse transformers PT1, PT2 and the discharge lamp LA are connected in series to the primary windings thereof, respectively.
