Injection of gases is performed at two levels: one part, at 900-1400 degrees C, in injected into the higher part of the boshes, and distributed in a peripheral column along the walls; the other part is injected either by the principal tuyeres or by auxiliary tuyeres situated slightly higher than the principal tuyeres. This second part of the gases occupies, after traversing the lower part of the furnace, the central column of the furnace left free by the first part of the gases. The reformed gases are obtained by oxidation or thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, and contain H2 and/or CO. Pref. the tuyere gases are preheated to is approx. temp. of the flame at the principal tuyeres to avoid cooling the flame; or alternatively the flame temp. is itself increased by oxygenating the air-blast. Used to reduce coke consumption and provide a good gas-distribution in the furnace.
