PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of the need for splay-bend transition operation and the indispensability of a single purpose bend transition circuit therefor in an OCB (optically compensated bend) mode liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device containing a liquid crystalline medium which is characterized by comprising liquid crystal molecules fixed in a polymer liquid crystal matrix and aligned in hybrid arrangement or the liquid crystal display device containing a liquid crystalline medium which is characterized by comprising liquid crystal molecules fixed in a polymer liquid crystal matrix and aligned in homogeneous arrangement is used. In addition, a rubbing treatment method, an oblique vapor deposition method or a photo aligning treatment method is used as a method for forming an alignment layer. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
