Display unit (12) has a display region (22) of a given format. The display unit has a driver circuit (30) for control of the display region, a display controller (34) that processes information to be displayed dependent on the display format and a two-way data connection (32) for linking the display controller and the driver circuit. A configuration element is provided for determining the display format that is separate from the display controller and is linked to the back channel of the data connection via a multiplexer. The invention also relates to a corresponding display system with a multiplicity of display units and a method for presentation of visual data on a display unit.
