METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR MOBILE IP HOME AGENT CLUSTERING

Methods and apparatus for processing a registration request from a Mobile No de (210) that has roamed to a Foreign Agent (212) supporting Mobile IP are disclosed. In a first one of a plurality of Home Agents (202) supporting Mobile IP, a registration request addressed to a virtual Home Agent address associated with the plurality of Home Agents (202-208) is received. The registration request is then sent to a second one of the plurality of Home Agents (204) such that the second one of the plurality of Home Agents (204) creates a binding (216) between the Mobile Node (210) and the Foreign Agent (212). The first one of the plurality of Home Agents (202) creates a tempora ry binding between the Mobile Node (210) and the Foreign Agent (212). A registration reply is then received from the second one of the plurality of Home Agents (204). The temporary binding is then updated to create a permane nt binding (216) when the registration reply is received from the second one of the plurality of Home Agents (204). The registration reply is then sent to t he Foreign Agent (212) identified in the temporary binding.
