PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a metal halide lamp with high efficiency suitable for general illumination purpose. SOLUTION: The metal halide lamp comprises a discharge tube having a ceramic wall. The discharge tube has two electrodes of which, top end parts are separated with a distance EA from each other. The discharge tube has an inner diameter Di through the distance EA. The discharge lamp is filled with a filling material containing sodium iodide (NaI) and cerium iodide (CeI<SB>3</SB>), and the relation EA/Di>5 is fulfilled. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
