PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tandem mass spectrometer detecting decomposed ions with low mass number without lowering sensitivity and resolution of a quadrupole ion trap. SOLUTION: The quadrupole ion trap, dissociating and detecting the ion generated at an ion source accumulated into a three dimensional quadrupole electric field formed by a pair of end cap electrodes and a ring electrode, is made to have a mechanism generating a laser beam introducing structure and a supplemental alternating current electric field when dissociating the ions, and the direction of the supplemental alternating current electric field is made the same with the laser beam introducing direction. The method for a tandem mass spectrometer which is capable of detecting decomposed ionic substance with low mass number without lowering sensitivity and resolution of a quadrupole ion trap, is provided.
