PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera that can conduct accurate AF operation at a higher speed. SOLUTION: This digital camera 1 calculates a first lens position, based on the detected result of an auxiliary AF means 2 composed of a phase difference AF, etc., by means of a first lens position calculating means 6 and makes the first movement of an AF lens 11, aimed at the calculated first lens position by means of a lens control means 16. In the midst of moving the AF lens 11 to the first lens position, the camera 1 performs the calculation the contrast evaluation value of an image by means of a contrast evaluation value calculating means 10 and the detection of the position of the lens 11, by means of a lens position detecting means 12 several times and calculates a second lens position, at which the contrast evaluation value reaches a peak, based on the calculated and detected results of the calculating means 10 and detecting means 12 by means of a contrast peak position calculating means 13.
