A drill-string member (10) includes at least one grooved portion (22, 24) on an outer surface thereof. A pair of axially spaced-apart grooved portions (22, 24) are typically provided, with two such pairs axially spaced along the longitudinal length of the member (10). A plurality of grooves (26) are milled into the grooved portions (22, 24), and the grooves (26) intersect with one another to form a criss-cross pattern. As the member (10) is rotated, fluid flows up the grooves (26), where fluid from one groove (26) meets fluid from another groove (20) at each intersection, causing turbulence to be created.
