PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying 1,2-dichloroethane by which clogging of a column due to scale formation is prevented and stable purification can be carried out over a long period, comprising extracting and removing iron components such as an iron catalyst contained in crude 1,2-dichloroethane with water as an extractant by using a continuous countercurrent column. SOLUTION: The method for purifying the 1,2-dichloroethane comprises purifying the iron components in the crude 1,2-dichloroethane obtained by reacting ethylene with chlorine in the presence of the iron catalyst with water as the extractant. In the method, the continuous countercurrent column having a structure provided with a liquid countercurrent part composed of a cylindrical body extended in the vertical direction, liquid takeout ports in the upper and lower parts of the liquid countercurrent part, respectively and a liquid feed port in the liquid countercurrent part located between the liquid takeout ports in the upper and lower parts is used. The crude 1,2-dichloroethane is premixed with the extractant and the resultant mixed liquid is fed to the liquid feed port of the continuous countercurrent column to recover the 1,2-dichloroethane from the liquid takeout port in the lower part thereof.
