A washing machine for root crops e.g. beet has a container (1) with a washing chamber (2) and crop turntable (3) rotating about an axis (4) which is especially transposed to that (5) of the chamber (2). The beet rests on a sliding slope (6) which widens towards one side (10). The sliding slope (6) is at an angle of preferably 30 to 60 o with respect to the turntable and is formed as a segmented part of a conical mantle. The washing machine upper section (7) has a number of washing jets (8, 9). Which are directed at the normal to the passing beet. The jets have an oscillating or pulsating action. The turntable and sliding slope are separated by an annular gap.
