The piston ring has an inner peripheral surface with a non-circular contour in its un-stressed state, so that in its circular stressed state it has a defined radial pressure distribution and is obtained by machining a closed ring of an iron-based material. Initial grinding of the axial surfaces of the workpiece is followed by axially clamping the workpiece before machining the internal contour and the external surfaces via a numerically-controlled machine tool and dividing into individual piston rings.
