PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer which can be set at a normal position in accordance with a printing operation even when a user stops setting a ribbon cartridge at a ribbon cartridge guide part in the middle of the setting, and can carry out normal printing. SOLUTION: The ribbon cartridge 1 is guided and held at a recording position, and a thermal head 20 fixed to an arm member 16 is driven between an operation position where the thermal head is brought in a butting state onto a recording sheet S and a standby position. A thermal head moving means is provided with a butting member 30 having a butting face 30a which generates a component of force for moving the ribbon cartridge 1 towards a recording position by butting against an outer peripheral part 1a formed at the ribbon cartridge 1.
