PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of particles which are the cause of thermal asperity and to prevent the reduction of a recording and reproducing function due to the thermal asperity. SOLUTION: In an aluminosilicate glass substrate 1 for a magnetic recording medium, end surface parts (A, B, C) are specified to be mirror surfaces having <1μm surface roughness Ra. In the aluminosilicate glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium, angular parts existing between a side surface and a chamfered part of the glass substrate and between the principal surface and the chamfered part of the glass substrate are polished to form curved surfaces.
