Mechanical override release mechanism for cable tensioning systems

The release mechanism includes a hollow abutment member (36) fastened to one end of the flexible outer conduit (8) of the cable. The abutment member (36) is mounted for sliding movement in a housing (30), but is normally prevented from sliding by a stop member (32) associated with the housing (30) for engaging a shoulder on the abutment member (36). The stop member (32) establishes a reaction surface (33) against which the abutment member (36) and outer conduit (8) bear when the cable (7) is tensioned. Means (45, 46, 32) are provided for selectively moving the stop member (32) out of engagement with the shoulder of the abutment member (36), for example by a rotary movement, to permit axial movement of the abutment member (36) in the housing (30) when it is desired to release tension in the cable (7).
