PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for improving contrast using histogram matching are provided to control a degree of enhancement of contrast and to maintain relative brightness when the contrast is controlled. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for improving contrast includes the first and second calculation units(210,220) and a mapping unit(230). The first calculation unit calculates the average and standard deviation of an input image. The second calculation unit calculates the average and standard deviation of a target image on the basis of the average and standard deviation of the input image. The mapping unit receives the average and standard deviation of the input image and the average and standard deviation of the target image from the first and second calculation units to generate a mapping function, and converts pixel values of the input image according to the mapping function to output pixel values of an output image.
