A waste paper suspension containing coarse foreign objects is processed in a drum (6) assembly and subjected to abrasion. In a process to apply a protective 4 mm non-hardened chrome steel lining, a suitable panel (1, 1', 1) is made to locate securely within the drum (6) which also allows for its subsequent removal. The lining is applied as a series of panels forming a conical lining to a conical drum of diameter at least 1.2 m, and secured by screws or welding.
