PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect deviance abnormality of characteristics at the low outputting side of a fuel pressure sensor after the fuel pressure sensor has been mounted on a motor vehicle or after shipping of the sensor. SOLUTION: In the state of restarting an engine after expiration of more than a given time since the stopping of the engine, determination is made that the fuel pressure in a common rail has been lowered to the level of the atmospheric pressure (Patm), and that judgement as to abnormality (fault diagnosis) of the fuel pressure sensor (common rail pressure sensor) is possible. Then further determination is made as to whether or not a common rail pressure (Pc) corresponding to the atmospheric pressure is out of a given range (A<Pc<B). In the case where the common rail pressure (Pc) corresponding to the atmospheric pressure is out of the given range, detection is made that the characteristic deviance abnormality has occurred at the low outputting side of the fuel pressure sensor. Then an abnormality processing is conducted, i.e., injection rate of an injector and discharge rate of a supply pump are controlled on the basis of a target common rail pressure (Pt) which is fixed according to the operating conditions of the engine.
