<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize an exhaust emission resistance resulting from an exhaust emission control device, while minimizing the amount of particulate flowing out to the downstream side of the exhaust emission control device, in the exhaust emission control device having a particulate filter. <P>SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device comprises a particulate filter 43 for trapping particulates in the exhaust emission discharged from an internal combustion engine, a bypass passage 45 for bypassing the filter, and a cutout valve 46 cutting out the bypass passage. The internal combustion engine can selectively perform a stratified combustion and a homogeneous combustion. When a load requirement is smaller than a threshold determined according to an engine speed, the stratified combustion is performed and when the load requirement is larger than the threshold determined according to the engine speed, the homogeneous combustion is performed. While the stratified combustion is performed, the cutout valve cuts out the bypass passage, and while the homogeneous combustion is performed, the cutout valve opens the bypass passage. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
