PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide (1) an azo compound, especially a bisazo compound, which has a new structure and is used as a functional compound such as a medicine, an agrichemical, or the coloring matter of a coloring composition, and its synthetic intermediate, and to provide (2) a method for easily producing the bisazo compound used for the above-described purpose. SOLUTION: This azo compound is represented by general formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>are each H or a monovalent substituent, provided that arbitrary two of R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>5</SP>are Ra and Rb, respectively; A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each a substituted or un-substituted aryl or heteroaryl, provided that at least one of A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>is the heteroaryl).
