PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure an appropriate difference in level in an intermediate inclined part of an escalator. SOLUTION: A plurality of steps 2 connected endlessly are moved along a drive rail 5 forming a circulation passage. The speed of moving the steps 2 is higher in the intermediate inclined part C than in an upper platform part A or in a lower platform part E. The ratio of the moving speed of the steps 2 in the intermediate inclined part C to the moving speed of the steps 2 in the upper platform part A and in the lower platform part E is 2 or lower.
