PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that picks up the image of an object illuminated by a near infrared ray and that can prevent production of halation in a picked up image due to another illumination from a similar apparatus. SOLUTION: An operating timing pulse supply section 11 supplies a pulse to a near infrared ray illumination electronic flash 1 and a near infrared ray receiving CCD camera 3 which operate interlockingly with each other by each pulse. An image processing section 5 processes an image taken by the CCD camera 3 and a halation detection section 8 detects halation in the image. When the halation exists, an operation switching control section 10 stops supply of continuous pulses of a prescribed interval operated in an ordinary state 1 to select supply of random operation pulses from a random operation section 13. Since the electronic flash and the camera are thereby operated at random, the imaging apparatus is operated at a timing different from that of illumination of an oncoming car so as to prevent the halation.
