To release the safety lock (13) at an elevator, which has been tripped if the elevator cage (2) descent was at a dangerous level, the elevator cage is moved by a drive against the direction which tripped the lock. At least one limit stop (17) at the elevator cage is moved against the holding brake (14), to shift it away from the elevator rail (1) and release the locking action.
