PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a saw wire, used in cutting a hard material, and capable of minimizing heat generated during grinding and deformation due to external tensile force, and forming a high-quality machined surface having ultraprecise warp. SOLUTION: In this saw wire, a layer plated with copper, tin or brass relatively softer compared with the basis material metal is formed on the surface of a high carbon steel wire 1a. The hardness value of high carbon steel wire from the surface of the soft plated layer to a depth of 20μm is 1.00 to 1.25 times as large as the hardness value of the central part. Thus, the deformation of the saw wire due to friction between a body to be cut and the saw wire in cutting can be minimized to provide an excellent machined surface under the stable cutting condition.
