PURPOSE: A shock absorbing apparatus of a vehicle bumper is provided to minimize a shock in time of collision of a vehicle by allowing the bumper to be drawn out forwardly upon collision to lengthen contact time with a forward driving vehicle or an obstacle. CONSTITUTION: A shock absorbing apparatus comprises a bumper(100), a cylinder(130), a piston(120), first and second air lines(151,152), a select valve(150), and a controlling portion(170). The bumper(100) is filled with a shock absorbing material(110). The cylinder(130) is fixedly installed on a vehicle body frame(140) which is located at the rear of the bumper(100). The piston(120) has a piston rod(121) which is fixedly installed in the bumper(100), and reciprocates within the cylinder(130). Each of first and second air lines(151,152) are provided at each opposite sides of the cylinder(130). A select valve(150) is connected to the first and second air lines(151,152) to selectively supply air from an air pump(160) with first and second air lines(151,152). The controlling portion(130) receives signals from a sensing portion(170) which senses speed and distance of a vehicle driving ahead, thereby controlling the select valve(150).
