Biometric recognition system for use with a digital camera that has a pre-connected optical filter and a light source with a wavelength matched to the filter range. The light source can be planar or comprises a multitude of point light sources. The source is pulsed synchronously with an alternating image or shutter opening of the camera. Thus the brightness of an imaged object lies within the dynamic range of the camera, while light radiation incident on the human eye lies within the maximum allowable limit.
