PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for sensing the upper part of a form or detecting the front edge part of a medium advancing through a printer. SOLUTION: The method for detecting the front edge part (74) of a print medium (22) when it advances along a medium drive passage through a printer having an encoder strip (28) for controlling the position of a print cartridge comprises step (a) for detecting existence of front edge part (74) of the medium, and step (b) for generating a reference signal corresponding to existence of the front edge part of the medium at the encoder strip (28) in response to the step (a).
