The universal machine provides peripheral (32) management by creating a tree of peripheral descriptions. The information needed to control the peripheral is collected in the course of the traversal of the tree, from each leaf encountered. A peripheral is described by elementary characteristics that can be processed by a linked hierarchy of virtual machines (30,31; 20,21).
