Purified water with, optionally one or more chemical additives, is injected into the combustion chamber of a gas engine 40, eg one which runs on natural gas or biogas. The optional additives include ethylene glycol, acetic acid, aromatic hydrocarbons (which may contain emulsifiers), cresylic and phenolic acids and water-based biodegradable non-toxic fluids. The water injection pressure may be controllable between 8 to 10 bar. The water turns to vapour which conditions the engine and improves its efficiency; for example, the water vapour prevents silicon combining with oxygen in the combustion air, thus retarding the formation of silicon oxides and avoiding pre-ignition. The water vapour also reduces combustion temperature, thus reducing detonation and NOx emissions. The water may be purified to an impurity level of 2-30 ppm. The water supply and purification system may include a pump 8, a sediment filter 10, a pre-filter 12, a conductivity meter 16, a reverse osmosis membrane 20, an injection boost pump 26, a post filter 28, a demineralisation resin unit 30, a conductivity meter 38 and an outlet solenoid valve 44. The water supply may be shut off and/or an alarm given if the water purity falls below a critical level. |
