PURPOSE: A projection type display unit, a display unit, and a driving method thereof are provided to change the quantity of emitted light by a light modulation unit without changing the intensity of light emission from a lamp and to secure excellent image expression and adaptability to operational environment. CONSTITUTION: A projection type display comprises an illumination unit, a light modulation unit modulating light emitted from the illumination unit, and a projection unit projecting light modulated by the light modulation unit. The illumination unit has a light source(2), a uniform illumination unit making a distribution of illumination of light incident from the light source uniform, and a liquid crystal element for light adjustment(5), installed on an optical axis of light emitted from the light source, to adjust the quantity of light emitted from the light source. The quantity of light emitted from the illumination unit per unit time is adjustable by driving the liquid crystal element for light adjustment with time-sharing in response to information from outside. |
