Method for marking a component, whereby an ultra- short high energy laser beam pulse is directed at the surface of the component so that a marking is produced in a surface region of the component. The marking corresponds to a region that has increased reflective or absorptive properties that result from a modification of the complex refractive index. A component marking can be viewed by an unaided eye, with the component itself made from plastic, oxide, fluoride or a glass compound.
