[Also in Division B2] In an apparatus for making a continuous rod by wrapping a continuous paper web 3 around a continuous filler of filter material, adhesive is applied to the web 3 before it reaches the garniture 2 and the web 3 is supported just upstream and downstream of the zone where the adhesive is applied. In one embodiment, Figs. 1A, 3, suitable for use with a starch paste adhesive, the web 3 passes over a bridge 9 and the paste is applied in a continuous thin strip running close to one edge of the web 3 by a pasting wheel 17 located so as to act in the zone between two humps 12 of the bridge 9. Air is blown through a pipe 21 and a jet 22 in the bridge 9 to urge the web 3 against the periphery of the pasting wheel 17. The bridge 9 also includes shoulders 10 for laterally guiding the web 3, and means for adjusting its position relative to the web 3. In this embodiment an otherwise conventional garniture, Fig. 1, additionally includes two banks of air jets 6, 7 to hold the pasted part of the paper web 3 away from the folding members of the garniture 2. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), suitable for use with a polyvinyl acetate adhesive, the pasting wheel 17 is replaced by the nozzle (31) of a gun (30) fed with liquid adhesive by a peristaltic pump (35), and the air jet 22 in the bridge 9 is dispensed with. With this adhesive, the banks of air jets 6, 7 in the garniture 2 are not required. |
