PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic receiving apparatus equipped with a condition capable of obtaining superior sensitivity in the ultrasonic receiving apparatus of an optical detection system. SOLUTION: The ultrasonic receiving apparatus is provided with an ultrasonic detecting element 17 having an ultrasonic sensible portion having a length not larger than 3/4 of a wavelength of ultrasonic waves propagated therethrough as an ultrasonic detecting element for modulating light on the basis of ultrasonic waves applied thereto, and an optical detector 16 for detecting light outputted from the ultrasonic detecting element.
