PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method whereby the quantity of waste water generated from the backwashing can be markedly decreased without detriment to the differential pressure recovery performance due to backwashing in backwashing a filter of a type of bottom-fixed filter element and to provide an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The method for backwashing a filter is one in which, on a partition that partitions the inside of a filtration tower into the upper and lower compartments, a filter element contained in the upper compartment is fixed, the water to be treated and introduced into the upper compartment is filtered with the filter element, is passed to the lower compartment, and is discharged, wherein a backwashing step of sending backwashing water from the lower compartment to the upper compartment through the filter element is started while the water to be treated is retained in the upper compartment.
