The holder for a drink container in a motor vehicle comprises a housing (2) upon which is mounted a slide (3) which can slide out with spring assistance and slide in against spring force. The slide is in two sections with the first (6) guided in the housing and the second (7) providing a guide for the first section. A locking mechanism (8) acts between the first and second sections, and engages when the second section is partially slid in with regard to the first section. The locking mechanism comprises a gear rack (9) on the first section or housing, and on the second section a pivotable lever (10) with a gearwheel (14) equipped with a reverse motion lock.
