Homogeneous multicomponent dispersions in which at least two types of finely divided particles, having particle sizes differing by at least a factor of three between two of the types, are dispersed in a medium, are prepared by a process including: (a1) if one of the types of particles has surface groups X and an other of the types of particles has surface groups W, contacting the particles with a species D which comprises at least one group B and at least one group E, where group X and group B, and group W and group E, respectively, form a bond with each other such that X-B and W-E bonds are formed, or (a2) providing at least two of the types of particles with opposite surface charges; and (b) dispersing the particles in the medium.
