PURPOSE: A brushing apparatus is provided which is equipped with position detectors at left and right sides of metal strip in such a way that the position detectors are not damaged by metal powder during brushing, influence of cleaning water and contact with the metal strip. CONSTITUTION: In a roll reciprocating type brushing apparatus comprising a brush roll stand(1) on which a brush roll(2) for brushing metal strip (P) is mounted, a moving means for moving the brush roll stand, and a control means, the roll reciprocating type brushing apparatus is characterized in that it comprises a position detector(100) which is attached to the brush roll stand controlled by the control means so that the position detector is reciprocated in a width direction of the metal strip to detect an end part of the width direction of the metal strip, wherein the position detector(100) comprises an injection part(101) for injecting a linear stream of water or air from one side of inner and outer surfaces of the metal strip to the other side of the inner and outer surfaces of the metal strip at positions respectively corresponding to both end parts of the brush roll, and a receiving part(102) which is arranged oppositely to the injection part for the metal strip so as to output detection signals to the control means depending on whether there is incidence of the linear stream or not by receiving the injected linear stream of water or air.
