Disclosed are conditioning compositions for the hair containing compounds of the formula (R<1>)(R<2>)N(CHCH2OC(O)R)2X<->; wherein R<1> is alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R<2> is alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or benzyl; X<-> is an anion; and R is alkyl and alkylene of 12 to 22 carbon atoms having 0 to 3 carbon-carbon double bonds, provided that at least 2 different chain lengths R are present and 0, 1 and 2 such double bonds are present.
