PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dyeing composition for keratin fibers which is nonselective, has high resistance and can develop variety of hues, and also to provide a new compound useful as an oxidation base. SOLUTION: The dyeing composition is formulated with a 2,5-diaminopyridine derivative represented by formula (I) [wherein, Z<SB>1</SB>is OR<SB>3</SB>or NR<SB>4</SB>R<SB>5</SB>; R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>4</SB>and R<SB>5</SB>are each H, a 1-6C alkyl or a 2-6C polyaminoalkyl group; and R<SB>3</SB>is a hydroxyl or an amino group].
