The application discloses a security marker comprising a nucleic acid molecule, the nucleic acid molecule comprising: (i) a first primer region substantially the reverse complement of a first primer; (ii) linked to the first primer region a marker region comprising a predetermined nucleic acid sequence capable of identifying the source of the security marker; (iii) a binding region for attaching the security marker to an object; and (iv) a predetermined cleavage site for allowing the separation of the first primer region and the marker region from the binding region.
