The method involves varying the compression ratio of the air-fuel mixture by varying the cylinder (6) volume. The cylinder volume is varied using an aperture connected to an opening (16) in its circumference and a sliding element (14) movable tangentially or secantially to the cylinder's circumference so as to expose or close the aperture.
