PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for polymerizing an olefin, with which an olefin polymer having a wide molecular weight distribution can be obtained while keeping high stereoregularity of polymer and to provide a method for polymerizing an olefin. SOLUTION: This catalyst for polymerizing an olefin comprises (A) a solid catalytic component prepared by bringing a dialkoxymagnesium (a) and a tetravalent titanium halide compound (b) into contact with an electron donative compound (c), (B) an organoaluminum compound, represented by general formula (1): R<1> q AlQ3-p and (C) an aminosilane compound represented by general formula (2): R<2> R<3> Si(OR<4> )2 . This method for polymerizing an olefin comprises using the catalyst for polymerizing an olefin.
