PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up the connected component extracting process that extracts connected components including a specified pixel in a binary image, used frequently as basic processing, by eliminating the conventional wasteful processing to calculate all connected components in an image. SOLUTION: The processing is performed by limiting to local processing instead of performing full processing such as scanning the whole image. More specifically, the processing start with a graphic made of a specified pixel, the processing of graphic propagation and the AND operation between the graphic and an input image are repeated until the graphic change does not occur. At that time, speed-up of the processing is conducted by restricting the processing range within inside of a variable window surrounding the graphic. 'graphic' means a collection of pixels of one value.
