PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recording thumbnails which is respectively optimum to a rewritable medium and a write-once type medium in the case that the rewritable medium and the write-once type medium are respectively used. SOLUTION: Timing of generating and writing a thumbnail image is made variable in accordance with the type and state of a disk.
