Optical storage medium, especially a CD, DVD or CD-ROM, has a machine readable storage element in the form of an inductively read microchip. During manufacture the chip is built into the plastic material of the storage medium. A corresponding inductive reader incorporated into the storage medium drive can read the chip and is controlled by a separate controller.
