PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an arm type document pressing mechanism of an image reader, which can securely press a document in longitudinal reading irrelevantly to the rigidity and curvature of a document cover, etc., and bring documents of any size into contact with a glass surface, and the image reader. SOLUTION: The image reader is equipped with a rectangular glass 16 for document reading which is provided on one surface of a device main body and the cover 13 with a rectangular window which presses and fixes the circumferential part of the glass 16 from above, and an arm type document pressing mechanism comprises a thin and long arm 20 which is as thick as the cover 13; and the arm 20 is rotatable on a hinge 21 as a fulcrum over the glass 16 and the fulcrum is engaged with a corner part of the cover 13 while having resistance against rotation so that the arm is stored in a cut part formed along the long side of the window of the cover almost in the same shape with the arm 20.
