PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer usable at a plurality of positions, comprising a near end detecting mechanism to be used without the need of adjustment at the time of changing the printer position. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a supporting means 16 for supporting a roll paper 14, a printing means 18, a near end detecting lever 32, and a detecting means 34 for detecting the position of the near end detecting lever, wherein the near end detecting lever 32 supported rotatably by a rotatable supporting shaft 36, comprises a first part 38 elongating from the rotatable supporting shaft to one side, and a second part 40 elongating from the rotatable supporting shaft to another side, the first part 38 of the near end detecting lever can be contacted with the roll paper at the time the printer is used at a first position, and the second part 40 of the near end detecting lever can be contacted with the roll paper at the time the printer is used at a second position different from the first position.
