PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer in which the gap between a print head and a platen can be adjusted without rotating a guide shaft and the dowel gap can be adjusted by rotating a cam easily even in case of a drive motor of relatively low torque. SOLUTION: When an interlocked cam 7 is rotated by means of a drive motor M1 through a drive cam 11 and a reduction gear 10 and the large diametral part of the cam touches a roller 6, the roller 6 is pushed down while resisting against an elastic force being applied from a lever 8. Consequently, a guide shaft 41 supporting a carriage 3 descends through a guide hole 51 and the carriage 3 also descends to bring a print head 1 close to the platen 2. When the small diametral part of the cam 7 touches the roller 6, the roller 6 is pushed up by an elastic force being applied from the lever 8 and thereby the guide shaft 41 ascends through a guide hole 51. Consequently, the carriage 3 also ascends to separate the print head 1 from the platen 2.
