PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new protein useful for elucidating the molecular structure and function of a glutamate receptor. SOLUTION: The objective gene encoding a modified form of an NMDA-type glutamate receptor is created by the site-specific mutation induction of an NMDA-type glutamate receptor cDNA obtained from mouse cerebellum. The corresponding mRNA is synthesized from the modified gene and then transferred into an oocyte of Xenopus and translated to obtain the modified form. The thus obtained modified form is useful for elucidating the neural information transmission at synapse, the expression of synapse plasticity serving as a base of memory and learning, and a neurocyte necrosis occurring in a disease state such as cerebral ischemia or status epilepticus, and understanding the neural information transmission mechanism in the nerve center, the higher-order structure of the brain, and brain disease state, and useful for treating genetic diseases and creating new pharmaceutical preparations as well.
